3 TED Talks You Should Watch This Year

If you’re not regularly diving into the presentation treasure trove of TED Talks then you’re doing yourself a major disservice. Not only are TED Talks some of the most inspiring, motivating, and empowering content around, but they have loads to teach you about how to deliver an impactful presentation.

Carving out 20 minutes in your schedule every now and then to watch these presentations will show you a wealth of nuances, tips, and techniques you can use to elevate your own delivery and make better connections with your audiences. TED Talks are truly an invaluable presentation resource and the following three need to be at the top of your watch list this year.

“Poverty isn’t a lack of character; it’s a lack of cash” by Rutger Bregman

One of the reasons that TED Talks have become so popular is that they’re full of presenters who are bold and brave enough to present provocative ideas. During his presentation, historian, Rutger Bregman, makes a case for guaranteed basic income. At first thought, the idea probably seems pretty absurd to most, but Bregman presents it in such a masterful way that not only does it not seem absurd; but he makes it seem like a highly reasonable option for the future. You’ll learn a lot about how to present a controversial idea here.

“Why you should define your fears instead of your goals” by Tim Ferriss

If anyone knows how to confront fears, it’s extreme-living investor and author, Tim Ferriss. In his presentation, Ferriss delivers the compelling idea that if we want to accomplish our loftiest goals, then we must have the courage to examine our fears because we become paralyzed when we don’t. He argues with precision why it’s critical to look at what makes us most vulnerable and leverage it to our advantage. “What happens in your brain when you pay attention?” by Mehdi Ordikhani-Seyedlar

In his talk, neuroscientist, Mehdi Ordikhani-Seyedlar, gives us a glimpse into the human brain and how, exactly, it decides what we pay attention to. It’s a fascinating discussion of the ways we can leverage our brain patterns to focus and communicate more effectively, and how that idea can be elevated even further to alleviate certain communication and mental health disorders like ADHD. Not only will this talk teach you how to focus better, but it’s a great model for getting your audience to focus on what you’re saying during your presentations as well.
