Video Success! How We United Beauty + Science in “Why Colors Matter”

It’s hard to convince clients that science and beautiful design can coexist. When we look at a gorgeous landscape for instance, we appreciate and enjoy the view. We are usually unaware of psychological studies which exist solely to prove how and why our brains love pastoral scenes.

When our designers select colors for a project, their experience and existing knowledge in color psychology helps influence their decision. They know that colors can affect our beliefs and emotions, and are wise to evoke the right feeling for each project.

We wanted to create a video based on an existing blog post about color psychology, especially for businesses and brands. This would also serve a secondary purpose, by proving the importance of the principle itself. We wanted not merely to tell our audience about why colors matter, we wanted to show them with a color-wise and intelligent summary of a larger study.

The result? Check out the finished video below, and then read on to see how this video became a popular resource in our internal marketing arsenal.

Audience aware

Regardless of what industry you work in, color plays a key role in your marketing efforts. From billboards to Google ads to logos, you may already have certain rules of color floating around in your head from common sense or general knowledge. This video succeeds as one of our most popular marketing efforts because it is so easily applicable for marketers and brands, small or large.

Easy-to-follow animations

Our designers love the extra freedom for animation that a video project offers. In this particular video, movement acts as a “bouncing ball” to each typographical element. Because there is no narrator, the motion helps act as a nonverbal attention-grabber. This makes the transition through the narrative fast and clear, at just over a minute long.

Facts that stick

Editing down the content from the original blog post distills the complexity and leaves viewers with one simple, clear statement at about the 0:40 mark: “Color Is Powerful.” The stats after the statement all drive home this central point, with the additional points about improved learning and comprehension. When data heavy articles or source materials can be trimmed, the result is a stronger emphasis on the stats that matter. And of course, a much more memorable and helpful finished product.

We were able to prove our own point about color and beautiful design in this video, as per the thousands of views and shares across social media channels. It was a self-validating creation for our team, and another tool used to help reinforce our design logic for clients.
