How to Craft an Emotionally Intelligent Narrative

Emotional intelligence, or EQ, is the capacity to be aware of, control and express one’s emotions, and to handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically. Many presenters are finding success tapping into EQ when forming their language in order to relate to their audience on a higher level. Daniel Goleman, an American psychologist, developed a framework of five elements that define emotional intelligence. Today we will discover how to craft an emotionally intelligent narrative using these five elements.

Self Awareness

Know that not everyone is aware of their strengths and weaknesses. Offering ways to strengthen something for a person is a great way to tap into EQ. Does your product or idea make something stronger or diminish a weakness? These are things to think about when crafting your narrative.

Self Regulation

People with a high EQ are able to filter their decision making, ensuring they will not make frivolous purchases. Take the impulse factor out of your story to position your thought or item as a sound financial decision. Ultimately, savvy buyers will consider you more seriously once they don’t feel impulse pressure.

Motivation

A quick fix is not music to the ears of someone who is emotionally intelligent. They seek out more long-term solutions. Highlight the longevity of your product or idea when discussing its benefits.

Empathy

Identifying with a wide variety of wants, needs and viewpoints will ensure that you can garner the attention of your audience. Someone who is empathetic will find narrow perspectives polarizing and will tune out or get offended—even if their viewpoint is supported.

Social Skills

The ability to build and maintain relationships is the cornerstone to forging successful partnerships. People can tell when you are being genuine and when all you are doing is selling them something. Take the extra time to get to know your audience and meet them where they are at. Do some research before your pitch to speak to them directly and show you are interested in them as people as well as customers.

It is not always possible to be able to harness all five of these principles in each one of your presentations. First, figure out which one is lacking most and start there. Next, work in as many aspects of an emotionally intelligent narrative as you can refining your communication techniques. Feeling stuck?
