Your Voice Matters: How to Combat the Negativity

In the world of public opinion, it can feel like there are a lot of voices clouding the airways. And as a presenter, all these voices can make us shy away from our new ideas for fear of repercussion or harsh feedback we may receive.

As a professional public speaker, I know this fear all too well. That is why today’s blog is an encouragement to all the public speakers out there. Don’t shy away from your ideas! Instead, use your voice to make an impact on the world.

There are new dreams that have not been shared, ideas that have not been unveiled, and new programs that are waiting to be rolled out. As a presenter, you have a unique ability to not just inform but inspire audiences everywhere to bring their best selves to humanity through your thought leadership.

But what do we do when we bump against the haters? I was recently watching a well-known presenter share that no matter what she says, there are always a few people who will come back and tell her everything she did wrong. She expounded on the pain that is felt when these harsh responses are used. But then she went on to talk about the hundreds of other reviews that are positive. Why do we, especially as presenters, always focus on the negative?

Perhaps it is because the negative voices are louder, or perhaps because they sting a bit more. But no matter the reason, we as presenters must learn to drown out those voices and continue to bring our voices to the table.

So the next time you run in to negative voices that make you want to silence your voice, try these 3 tips to drown them out.

Focus on the Positive
While this may seem straightforward, we all know how difficult it can be. When you experience negative voices in the presentation space, take time and intentionally focus on the positive. Focus on the people who loved your presentation and allow their feedback to sink in.

Believe the Best
Sometimes the best way to negate a negative review is the believe the best in the person leaving it. Maybe they had a bad day, got in a fight with their significant other, or are struggling at work. Often times we allow our personal stressors to bleed into how we feel about a person. By allowing yourself to believe those negative reviews are not personal and that person does not dislike you, you will alleviate some of the anxiety that comes along with them.

Look Inward
The reality about negative feedback is that it is often rooted in some truth. As a presenter looking to elevate your voice and push against negativity, you must be willing to look inward and ask the question: What could I do to improve? By looking inward first, you will likely find areas you can work on that take some of the personal feelings out of the feedback.

As a presenter, your voice matters. It is important that you bring your best self to the table and allow your ideas to be heard. While there are a lot of negative personas out there who will try to dampen your spirit and silence your voice, implementing these 3 tips will give you the tools you need to fight back and elevate your voice to the world.
