Presenting with Google’s New Pixelbook – Will it Work?

This fall, Google released its new Pixelbook to mostly positive reviews. But reviews, of course, are subjective. Whether a Pixelbook is a good option for you is largely dependent on what you’ll be using it for.

That said, if you’re in the market for an alternative way to design and give presentations, let’s take a look at how well this new device is equipped to elevate your presentation game.

Hardware Versatility

This is one of the areas where the Pixelbook really shines. Its designed so that it can be collapsed into a tablet or a full-blown computer. But even better is the fact that it can be folded into “prop” mode, which allows presenters to read notes in an unobtrusive way throughout the presentation.

Software Compatibility

If you do most of your work using Google applications like Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides, then it’s tough to beat the convenience of the Pixelbook. Because it’s a Google product, it’s insanely compatible with all things Chrome. You can tap into Google Drive at any time and save files directly to your computer, easily collaborate on Slides, and work any other Google app quickly and seamlessly.

Pixelbook Pen

One of the standout features of the Pixelbook is the stylus that’s designed to be paired with it. The Pixelbook Pen is a $99 add-on that is sensitive to angle and pressure, which makes scribbling notes or images a breeze. Plus, it doesn’t even need to be paired over bluetooth—it just works. And Google Assistant also happens to be fully integrated into it.

Google Assistant

Designing a presentation often takes a lot of research and popping back and forth between windows. The Google Assistant feature in the Pixelbook makes research easier by being pretty much everywhere—including having a designated button on the keyboard. It analyzes your screen the moment you launch and provides smart search results based on what you’re looking at, which can save you a ton of time with presentation prep overall.

Handling Heavy Workloads

A lot of computers slow down when you throw too much at them. When you’re preparing a presentation, chances are high that you’ll be using any number of applications at one time, which can make things frustratingly slow. But because Pixelbook basically is Google, you can jump from Docs to Sheets to photo editing in Lightroom with virtually no delay.

Bottom Line

If you’re someone who prepares most of your presentation materials using Google web applications like Sheets, Slides, and Docs, then it’s tough to beat the speedy compatibility that Pixelbook offers. Plus, the fact that its design allows it to be folded into a perfect presentation prop that can be used for supplemental notes and explanations, makes it ultra-handy. Of course, for those features you’ll be paying a hefty price at about $1,000 (+$99 if you get the stylus) but the time it can potentially save you in the long-run just might make it worth it.
