Presentation Persona Spotlight: Emma Watson

At the 2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards, Emma Watson received the award for Best Actor in a Movie. Watson, who played Belle in the live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast, described the challenging aspects of the role and expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to star in the movie. In MTV’s video, Watson delivers her nearly 4-minute award acceptance speech.

Watson is organized, appreciative, and eloquent – all admirable characteristics for a successful presenter to maintain.

Emma Watson presentation persona

Based on our Badge assessment, I would score Watson as a Curator. During her speech at the MTV Movie & TV Awards, Watson scored high in every quadrant except Sharing.

Let’s review my break down of Watson’s presentation profile:

I believe this is the category where Watson performs the highest. Her speech follows a tight and seamless structure. She opens with an acknowledgement of the genderless award, then transitions to a description of her role in Beauty and the Beast and what it meant to her, and she closes with several rounds of “thank you’s.” Watson conveys a crisp and refreshing message with the help of her relentless preparation.

This is a low score for Watson. While she exudes a decent amount of confidence on stage, she bobs her head a bit too much and comes off a bit less than sincere. Her delivery of every single line in her speech was so spot on that she didn’t establish a genuine front.

Judging by the overwhelming sound of clapping and the presence of multiple grins, Watson scores high in the Response quadrant. Her audiences tend to enjoy her and react positively to her messages.

“The villages in our fairytale wanted to make Belle believe that the world was smaller than the way that she saw it, with fewer opportunities for her. That her curiosity and passion for knowledge and desire for more in life were grounds for alienation. I loved playing someone who didn’t listen to any of that.”

This is another high-scoring quadrant for the Curator, which is a direct reflection of their high Exploration score. Generally, a presenter who prepares extensively for their presentation and understands the need of his or her audience will set themselves up for the creation of a highly durable message. For Watson, her appeal to the universal themes of “diversity, literacy, inclusion, joy, and love” during her award acceptance speech spoke to her audience’s values.

Emma Watson is a smart, introspective, and thoughtful individual – making her a courageous Curator.
