Since President Donald Trump took office, he’s had a headstrong press secretary taking on reporters at the White House. Sean Spicer has made headlines for his aggressive approach to defending the president’s tweets, statements and actions. You can see what I’m talking about in the video below:
Sean displays strength, determination and attitude in this press briefing. This makes him an influential speaker who leaves an impression on his audience.
So what would Sean Spicer’s presentation persona be? Based on this exchange, I would score him as an Advocator where he scores high in the Response and Durability quadrants, but low in the Exploration and Sharing quadrants.
Here’s my breakdown:
Being the press secretary to the president is a demanding job that requires Sean to know every detail of what’s going on in the White House. However, when Sean is taking questions, he tends to give the same response over and over. It’s clear that he is more focused on the overall message than the nitty-gritty details. I give him a low score in this quadrant because I think he can craft better answers that include more details rather than a redundant statement to address each question.
This is another mid- to low score for Sean because of his assertive personality. While he achieves getting his message across, he often makes a sour connection with his audience. His hand gestures also suggest an antagonistic personality trait, with a lot of finger pointing. If Sean can relax and use positive body language, his Sharing score can improve. But being the press secretary, his job does require a degree of assertiveness.
Sean scores the highest in the Response quadrant. He is very active with his audience, since his job entails taking questions from reporters. Throughout his Q and A, he really drills in his message with prepared responses. And the audience always walks away remembering that message.
The Durability quadrant is another high score. Sean often makes headlines with his statements and how he delivers them. He also is active on social media platforms, which is a great way to carry on his message.
Sean Spicer is a straightforward and persuasive public speaker, which makes him a strong Advocator.
