How the Badge Assessment Made Me A Better Presenter

Every single one of us is built with a set of strengths and weaknesses. The pair changes in different situations. If we can be aware of exactly how to use our strengths to their full ability, and how to improve our areas of weakness, it will lead to more success. From a presenter’s standpoint, this is where the Badge assessment can change your life.

How the Badge Assessment Made Me A Better Presenter

For starters, I enjoyed taking the assessment. I am a fan of personality tests and love learning more about my natural traits. I found Badge to be fairly short and the questions not too difficult to answer. Afterwards, I was sent my presentation persona which was the Producer.

My first thoughts on this was how funny it was. My previous job was working in television news as a producer, so the irony that this would also be my presentation persona was humorous. But after reading What’s Your Presentation Persona?, I found that the Producer is a great fit for me. Let me walk you through how I scored in the four quadrants including Exploration, Sharing, Response and Durability.

This was my highest score which is not surprising given that I enjoy researching a variety of topics. The Producer is a natural at over-preparing and becoming an expert on the topic before they give their presentation. A lot of thought goes into the design and organization of the information, as well as knowing who the audience is and how to present to them. Once I became aware that this was my strength, I began to stress less on this part of building a presentation.

This quadrant was another high score for me because of my ability to stick to the main points and deliver a message. I’ve always been told that I am great at explaining things and telling stories. It never occurred to me how this made me a better presenter. The unique trait about the Producer in this quadrant is that we don’t waste the audience’s time. I personally dislike small talk, so I can see how this impacts my presentation.

This was my low score that opened my eyes to what I need to pay close attention to as a presenter. Producers tend to focus on delivering the information and less on interacting with the audience. No mind thinks the same. It is not safe to assume that everyone understands all the information you just presented. Taking questions after a presentation or mingling with the audience are some of the ways to improve.

The goal of every presenter is to deliver a message that has meaning and impact. Producers work really hard to make this happen. Because we speak with conviction and can craft a poignant message, we get a high score in Durability. This is because of all the time and work we put into the research and writing, it pays off in the end.

Overall, I am very happy that I took the Badge assessment and got the Producer. I find that knowing how I am as a presenter has helped me in other parts of my life. Now I try to further clarify myself when I’m talking to friends and family. I don’t worry so much when it comes to researching and developing content because I already tend to over-perform in that area anyway. I strongly urge you to take the Badge assessment and get a copy of What’s Your Presentation Persona? to discover more about yourself and unlock your full potential.
