Last week on February 6th, Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren made headlines and became a trending topic. She was silenced on the U.S. Senate floor during her speech against Senator Jeff Sessions becoming the nominee for U.S. Attorney General.
You can watch her address below. Senator Warren speaks from her own heart and mind as well as using research and resources to support her ideas. Then, about 36 minutes in, she is told to take her seat. That moment sparked an online movement the following day with the hashtag #ShePersisted as a declaration for all women who continue to fight for their beliefs despite resistance.
So how would I score Elizabeth Warren or what would her persona be? Based on her presentation alone, I would score her as a Producer where she scores high in 3 of the 4 quadrants which includes Exploration, Sharing, and Durability and mid-low in the Response quadrant.
Here is my explanation:
This is one of the Producer’s strongest quadrants. Senator Warren invests thought and time into her work before she ever opens her mouth. This is evident in the amount of times she cites previous statements Sessions has made himself, and her use of reading a letter Coretta Scott King wrote about Jeff Sessions in the 80s. She uses her preparation and research to backup her claims against Senator Sessions.
Throughout her address, Senator Warren holds a consistent conviction and authenticity. She knows what points to emphasize and uses humor and hand gestures to deliver them.
“I am surprised that the words of Coretta Scott King are not suitable for debate in the United States Senate.”
This quadrant holds the lowest scores for Senator Warren and you can see it play out in the video. Towards the end of her address, another senator declares an objection to her testimony against Senator Sessions and she is told to take her seat. Even though Elizabeth Warren and her followers may be influenced and in agreement with her speech, there are many others who will not see eye to eye, or will not retain her presentation’s content because they simply do not want to listen.
This presentation will be one that is talked about for years to come. Senator Warren was not only the center of a feminist battle-cry hashtag, but she also has more work to do. She is running for reelection in 2018, and Senator Sessions did become the new Attorney General.
Elizabeth Warren is a sharp and passionate speaker, which makes her a great Producer.
