A List of Demands For All Presentation Training Sessions

If you’re paying for a person to train your company on presentations or public speaking, you have a right to get your full money’s worth. Consider this list of essentials, and ask your trainer in advance if they plan to cover all of these topics. If they aren’t, you may want to consider hiring a different speaker, or looking into other more comprehensive training.

Think of this like a manifesto. If your demands aren’t being met, maybe you should riot?

Presentation Training…

Needs to Cover Design

We live in the age of big, shiny pictures. 63% of all social media content is visual, and clearly, images are the bulk of what we love to share and consume. Modern presentations and speeches reflect this by using visual accompaniments, whether it’s an Apple release or a TED talk. If you aren’t being trained in the best way to design a PowerPoint deck or other design piece, you’re probably wasting your time and money.

From handout materials to supporting data visualizations, there are so many ways that design can enhance the spoken word. Training should always spend some time covering the basics of how to make your content work seamlessly with visual elements.

Must Include A Lesson in Storytelling

According to Uri Hasson from Princeton, a story is the only way to activate parts in the brain so that a listener turns the story into their own idea and experience.” Source: The Science of Storytelling: Why Telling a Story is the Most Powerful Way to Activate Our Brains

The best modern speakers use stories to make a point. And in fact, the best ancient speakers have been using storytelling since the days of campfires in caves. If your training session doesn’t cover the best way to utilize this crucial technique, we recommend you give them a time out, preferably in one of those story-rich caves.

Understands Different Purposes

Is your speaker going to cover best practices for different kinds of speaking environments? This can include investor pitches, company overviews, keynotes, educational talks, and more. It’s important that the trainer understands the kind of work your company does, and the different kind of speeches that each employee may deliver during their time there.

Always be sure to ask what kind of speaking topics will be addressed. “General” tips simply won’t be enough to help your team deliver a speech when then purpose dictates the content.

Should Help Reduce Fear

3 out of 4 people experience speech anxiety. You might even be nodding in agreement to that right now. What is your trainer going to do to address this concern? If public speaking is truly one of the top (or even number one) phobias that human beings face, how can your training session help mitigate those fears?

All sessions should devote time to help make your team less anxious of time spent on stage. What good can you gain from learning speech basics if you’re too afraid to deliver?

Does Your Training Session Make the Grade?

If any of these crucial elements are missing from your upcoming event, we recommend that you have a little heart-to-heart with the speaker to see if you can address them. If they won’t budge on their topics, maybe it’s time you found someone who is able to meet modern presentation needs.
