I don’t know your learning style, but I do know mine – I am a visual learner. If I hear it, I will forget it. If I see it, I will remember it. It’s just the way my brain works. That’s probably why I chose presentation design and training as a profession. =)
At any rate, I strongly feel that over the years we have forgotten the beauty and power of visual communications. I don’t know if we should blame academics, our professions, our culture, etc. We can probably sit here and point fingers all day long, but the sad reality is that we have lost touch with the art of visual storytelling. We make the simple complex and the complex even more complex through overwhelming slides with text, useless business jargon, or pointless facts. Look at our business presentations today. They serve as a testament to that reality.
Let’s get back to the basics, our roots, our childhood – simplicity in learning through visuals. We can take a lesson from Sesame Street by watching this video below. It’s simple, visually powerful, and helps the viewer retain the information.
