The Laws of Wearing Ties for Presenters

We’ve already explored the history of ties and why we wear them, but now let’s examine how to do so elegantly, especially in a business casual or formal setting. Presenters aren’t simply selling their message; they are in a way presenting themselves. Here are a few fast rules on how to do so without saying “I am not qualified to stand in front of people. For example, look at my miserable tie/shirt combo.”

Pick A Color

Ties are designed to generally be busier and incorporate more colors, giving them a lot of flexibility to match different shirts. Look at the tie and find a color element that you could potentially match (but isn’t identical) to your shirt. The dominant color will be repeated in the shirt and compliment it nicely.

“Check” Mate

One strange yet universal rule is that if you are using a checkered patterned shirt and tie, the smaller checks should be worn closer to the body, and the larger checks can be used on the tie. A follow-up to this rule is that the size of checks should never be identical. Just trust the laws of this, just how you trust that a falling piece of toast will always land butter-side down.

Length

You are not a rockstar in the 70s. The length of your tie should reach belt buckle or the waistband of your pants; no more and no less.

Graphics

Patterned graphics can be tasteful, such as small repeating motifs of anchors. However, don’t select a graphic tie and a graphic shirt. Doubling up on checkers, stripes, and even dots may be fine, but your graphic piece should stand alone.

Compliment, Don’t Match

The colors and patterns can be in the same family, but don’t make them identical. Your tie is not a game of “Where’s Waldo?” on your shirt front.

Beware Identical Pattern Proportion

Similar to the rule of checks, try not to match large polka dots with large polka dots or huge stripes with huge stripes. One pattern should be more delicate, and overall, one article should accent the other (preferably the tie).

As far as knots are concerned, the internet is a treasure of resources to help you decide and execute a tidy one. Follow these rules, be mindful of your choices, and don’t panic; ties make everyone look pretty dapper.
