Motion Design Analysis: Network by Michael Rigley

Network from Michael Rigley on Vimeo.

There’s really no better way to say it: we absolutely love Michael Bigley’s Network video. The piece does a great job explaining a concept that’s completely foreign to most people, and it toes the lie between complexity and simplicity in a masterful way. Bigley’s animations visually explain the information in an incredible way, particularly in regards to representing the enormity of networks. He does well to get across the most important aspects of networks– the size, depth and interconnectedness of information– in an impactful and memorable way. We especially love how he makes up big shapes with little ones; it’s the ideal representation of a network.

Another element that intrigued us about Bigley’s video is the ethereal world he creates. Everything from his use of blurring, depth of field, and muted gradients to his choice of music contribute to this otherworldly atmosphere. And the video’s constant flow and fluid transitions lend it a feeling of discovery and adventure. There’s never a slow or dull moment.

But perhaps the most important thing to note about Bigley’s Networks piece is how exceptionally he took the complex idea of “networks” and broke it down into something easy to understand and fun to watch. We’ll go the grave shouting about the importance of distilling complexity into simplicity in a presentation, which Bigley has done a truly incredible job of in this example.
