Inspiration via We Love Typography

Typography is one of the more accessible forms of graphic design. Everyone loves an attractive typeface, and with the increasing popularity of visual-oriented blog platforms like Pinterest and Tumblr, great typographic-based designs have become much more prevalent. You don’t need to have an eye for design to appreciate a clean design distinguished by a striking typeface, which is why we love the website We Love Typography. It’s a great resource for typography inspiration through your Monday morning drowse.

We Love Typography is aptly named as it’s a forum for all things typographical. There are posters with inspirational quotes, hand drawn types, vintage posters, whole alphabets of a particular typeface, maps, restaurant and shop logos, magazine spreads, and more. Anything and everything related to type is featured. There’s a little something for everyone.

Are you feeling reds this morning? Or how about greens or oranges? You can filter the examples by color on WLT, as well as choose how many designs you want featured on the page. If you’re not sure what you’re looking for, or you’re not looking for anything in particular, click random and see what pops up.

For the untrained eye, typography tends to be one of those things (and designers hate to hear this) that you know what you like when you see it. We can go through example after example and say whether we like it or not, right off the bat, so it’s fun (and particularly useful for the untrained), to have a vast collection of well-designed examples housed on one site.

Nick Shinn, a well-respected typeface designer, once said, “It is the designer/typographer’s task to match form with content; to create an authoritative document.” This is particularly important to consider when designing a presentation. We must ensure that our choice of typography fuses well with the content at hand, which is why resources like WLT are important to peruse before you begin the design process.

We have a few complaints about the design of WLT in terms of usability, but nothing that deters us from frequenting the site often. It seems like there should be an easier way to go from example to example. It’d be great to have an option to continuous scroll through examples rather than each having its own webpage.

Regardless, We Love Typography is a wonderful resource for anyone looking for inspiration related to typography. A quick rummage around the site will give you a good idea of what you like and what you don’t like, and from there you’ll be well suited to begin designing your next presentation.
